Włocławek, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
Włocławek Cathedral (say "vwo-TSWAH-vek"), the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption on Copernicus Square, is one of the oldest and most important Gothic churches in Poland. Its soaring red-brick spires rise above the Vistula River in a mid-sized city between Toruń and Łódź, and inside you'll find 14th-century stained glass, a bishop's tomb attributed to the great late-Gothic sculptor Veit Stoss and a Gothic panel painting of the Assumption. Since 2018 it has been a Monument of History.
Bishop Maciej of Gołańcz laid the foundation stone on March 25, 1340. The church was first consecrated in 1411, once the nave was largely complete, but construction carried on through the 15th century; the north tower was finished only in 1526. In the early 16th century two side chapels received Renaissance domes with lanterns.
The cathedral's present silhouette, with its tall spires, is the result of a Gothic Revival restoration in 1883–1901, partly to designs by Konstanty Wojciechowski, when the towers were raised. It was named a minor basilica in 1907. Tradition says the young Nicolaus Copernicus studied at the cathedral school here in 1488–1491 and helped design a sundial on one of the cathedral's chapels with his teacher, Mikołaj Wodka.
In 2018 the cathedral was declared a Monument of History — the highest national heritage designation in Poland, granted by presidential decree.
Allow 30–60 minutes. The Diocesan Museum is next door in the former Vicars' College.
The cathedral is a working parish church. The parish does not publish regular visiting hours, and its website, katedrawloclawek.pl, is under construction (as of October 2026). The parish office is open Monday–Friday, 4:00–5:00 p.m. (tel. +48 54 231 22 32, e-mail katedra.wloclawek@op.pl) — contact it to arrange a guided visit; groups should always book ahead. Information is in Polish.
In winter the interior can be cold and daylight short, so come in the middle of a sunny day if you want to see the stained glass at its best.
The address is pl. Mikołaja Kopernika 7, 87-800 Włocławek, right by the Vistula and the steel bridge named after Marshal Edward Śmigły-Rydz. Włocławek lies on the A1 motorway between Toruń and Łódź and on the Kutno–Toruń railway line, so it combines easily with a trip to Toruń; Warsaw Chopin Airport and Bydgoszcz Airport are the nearest major airports.
Yes, if you love Gothic architecture and medieval art — the stained glass and the Stoss tomb alone justify a stop on the way to or from Toruń. Nearby you can also visit the graduation towers in the spa town of Ciechocinek.
