The Monument of the Uprising Act on St. Anne's Hill

The Monument to the Silesian Insurgents on St. Anne's Mountain (Góra Świętej Anny, roughly "GOO-ra SHVYEN-tey AH-nee") is a massive granite memorial by sculptor Xawery Dunikowski, unveiled in 1955 above a former quarry turned giant amphitheater. It honors the Polish insurgents of the Silesian Uprisings of 1919–1921, yet the site also bears the scars of a Nazi-era shrine and Cold War propaganda. Few places tell Upper Silesia's tangled Polish-German story so vividly.

Where it is and how to get there

St. Anne's Mountain (German: Sankt Annaberg) is a hill of about 400 m in the Opole region of southwest Poland, crowned by a famous Franciscan pilgrimage church. The monument stands on ul. Dunikowskiego in the village of Góra Świętej Anny, a few hundred meters from the basilica. By car it's about 50 minutes from Opole, around 1 hour from Katowice (79 km), about 1.5 hours from Wrocław (126 km) and just under 2 hours from Kraków. Parking is in the village center near the sanctuary.

A layered history

• The quarry: limestone was cut here until after World War I and hauled to the town of Zdzieszowice by a horse-drawn narrow-gauge railway; one old lime kiln survives.
• The 1921 battle: during the Third Silesian Uprising, Polish insurgents seized the hill on May 4, 1921, and German Freikorps and Selbstschutz units counterattacked from May 21. The fighting was inconclusive, and the border was settled by diplomats, but the hill became a symbol for both nations.
• The Nazi amphitheater: from 1934 the quarry was rebuilt as an open-air stage for Nazi party gatherings, designed by Berlin architects Franz Böhmer and Georg Petrich, with 7,000 seats and room for 20,000 standing — up to 50,000 people in all. A domed mausoleum for Germans killed in 1921 was completed above it in 1938.
• 1945 and after: the mausoleum was blown up in fall 1945. In 1946 Dunikowski's design was chosen for a Polish monument on the same spot, and after seven years of work it was unveiled on June 19, 1955.

What you'll see

The monument consists of four granite pylons, each 11 m high, carved with reliefs of early medieval warriors, Silesian insurgents and — reflecting the communist era — soldiers of the Red Army and the Polish People's Army. Those last scenes remain controversial today. Instead of the planned bronze insurgent figure, an obelisk bears the Grunwald Cross and the Silesian Uprising Cross. Below, the weathered stone tiers of the amphitheater curve around a grassy arena with the old quarry walls behind.

Visiting tips

• Admission: the monument and amphitheater are an open-air site with no tickets (as of October 2026); we could not find official opening rules.
• Time needed: 30–45 minutes for a walk through the amphitheater and up to the monument.
• Condition: the site belongs to Poland's Ministry of National Defense, and a planned restoration has been put on hold at the design stage. Steps and tiers are uneven and worn, so watch your footing.
• Heritage status: the monument lies within the national Historic Monument "St. Anne's Mountain — composed cultural and natural landscape" (2004).
• Money: Poland uses the złoty (PLN), not the euro.

Yes, if you're interested in 20th-century European history or monumental architecture. Combine it with the basilica and its baroque Calvary for a half-day trip.
