Museum of the Silesian Uprisings on Góra Świętej Anny

The Museum of the Silesian Uprisings on Góra Świętej Anny was established for the 40th anniversary of the Third Silesian Uprising, on the site of some of the fiercest fighting of 1921. Since 1980 it has been housed in the Polish House, standing in the woods on the slope between Leśnica and the sanctuary; the museum is a branch of the Upper Silesian Museum in Opole.

From the Leśnica school to the Polish House

The museum originally operated in the school building in Leśnica, where the headquarters of the Katowice Insurgent Regiment named after Józef Piłsudski was stationed during the Third Uprising. On the ground floor of the Polish House a collection of memorabilia of the participants of the Silesian uprisings and the Upper Silesian plebiscite has been gathered. Among the more valuable holdings are battle and veterans' banners and written orders issued during the Third Uprising.

Panorama and nature

The showpiece of the exhibition is the Panorama of the Silesian Uprisings, brought to life by a sound-and-light show. In 2006 the Nature Department of the Upper Silesian Museum was transferred to the museum — the first floor hosts temporary nature exhibitions and museum lessons. The hill itself, rising to 408 m above sea level, was designated a Historic Monument in 2004.

Practical information

Address: 28 Leśnicka street. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.00–12.00 and 13.00–16.00; closed on Mondays, and in the winter season also on Sundays. Tickets: PLN 6 regular and PLN 4 reduced, Thursdays are free of charge; the car park is free. The museum is about 800 metres on foot through the woods from the sanctuary with its amphitheatre.
