Wasilków, Podlachia
On almost 30 hectares in Wasilków, just beyond Białystok's northern city limits, stands a village made up of buildings moved here from all over Podlasie: windmills, a watermill, a smithy, cottages of the minor gentry and a Neoclassical manor house once visited by Ignacy Paderewski. The Podlaskie Museum of Folk Culture is an open-air museum right on Białystok's doorstep and a good place to understand, in a few hours, what village life looked like in this multicultural borderland of north-eastern Poland.
An ethnographic department operated in Białystok from 1962, and the open-air museum was founded in 1982 as a branch of the then Regional Museum. Professor Marian Pokropek's plan was to recreate entire settlement layouts of the region – row villages, street villages, a minor-gentry hamlet, scattered farmsteads, a manor complex and a forester's complex – on more than 100 hectares between the River Supraśl, the Sokółka railway and the Suwałki road. The first building, a smithy from Gródek, was moved here in 1984, and by the early 1990s almost 30 structures had arrived.
In November 1994 a fire destroyed nine buildings, and a tenth could only be saved for non-exhibition use. Among the losses were a mid-18th-century barn – the oldest building in the museum – and two rare horse-gin sheds. After this blow the site was reduced to just under 30 ha. From the late 1990s buildings were again moved in, and in September 2016 the Białystok Village Museum and the Ethnography Department of the Podlaskie Museum merged into an independent institution.
Next to the gamekeeper's lodge from Krusznik lies a boulder with a Russian inscription commemorating the survey of the Knyszyn Forest carried out by the Tsarist forest administration in the second half of the 19th century. Permanent exhibitions include Podlasie folk art and a village school in communist-era Poland.
The grounds are open all year, every day: 1 April – 30 September 9:00–17:00, 1 October – 30 March 9:00–16:00. In season (7 April – 30 September) a walking ticket costs PLN 15 (reduced PLN 8), and guided tours of the exhibitions (about 2 hours) PLN 35 (reduced PLN 25), starting at 9:00, 12:00 and 15:00. The exhibitions can only be visited with a guide. Admission is free on Mondays. Out of season some exhibitions are open by prior arrangement. English-language tours can be booked in advance. Address: ul. Leśna 7, Wasilków.
Allow 1.5–2 hours for a walk around the grounds, or half a day with the exhibitions. Time your visit to one of the guided tours – without a guide you will only see the buildings from outside. The site is large and partly wooded, so bring comfortable shoes and, in summer, insect repellent.
