Museum of Romanticism in Opinogóra

The Museum of Romanticism in Opinogóra (Muzeum Romantyzmu w Opinogórze) is housed in the Krasiński family's neo-Gothic palace, set in an English-style park of about 21 ha. The estate is tied to Zygmunt Krasiński, one of the three great bards of Polish Romanticism, and to his whole family. With its tower and battlements, the little palace looks like a miniature castle, and the museum shows interiors, mementos and exhibitions in several buildings. It is a pleasant day trip from Ciechanów or Warsaw.

Where it is

Opinogóra Górna (oh-pee-noh-GOO-rah GOOR-nah) lies about 7 km northeast of Ciechanów and about 80 km as the crow flies north of Warsaw, the nearest big city. A car is the easiest way to get here. Prices are in zloty (PLN). The museum's website is in Polish; call or email if you need help.

A short history

The Opinogóra estate was first mentioned in 1185 and passed to the Krasiński family in 1659. General Wincenty Krasiński, father of the poet Zygmunt Krasiński, built the small neo-Gothic palace in 1844 as the seat of the Opinogóra entail; a neo-Gothic manor outbuilding was built at the same time.

During the First World War the front line crossed the village in the Battle of Przasnysz and about half its buildings were destroyed. The Krasińskis kept the estate until 1945. The museum was founded on 20 May 1961 in the rebuilt palace. Family members, including the poet, are buried in the crypt of the neoclassical Church of St. Sigismund, funded by Róża Krasińska.

• The Manor (Dwór), an early-20th-century building designed by Józef Gałęzowski.
• The outbuilding, the carriage house and the orangery, with more exhibitions; some displays change over time.
• The landscape park (about 21 ha) with views of the palace and a crenellated stone wall.
• A church and cemetery within the grounds.

How long to allow

Allow 2 hours for the palace and other exhibitions, or half a day with the park. The park can be entered for a walk outside exhibition hours as well (October 2026: Monday-Thursday 7:00-20:00, Friday-Sunday 7:00-22:00). Dogs are allowed only on a leash and with a muzzle, and bicycles may be walked in, with no riding on lawns. Tickets can be bought online at bilety.muzeumromantyzmu.pl.
