Collegiate Basilica of the Annunciation in Pułtusk

The Collegiate Basilica of the Annunciation in Pułtusk (pronounced "poo-WTOOSK") is one of Mazovia's finest churches and an official Polish "Monument of History". The Gothic and Renaissance building is famous for the "Pułtusk vault", a Renaissance painted ceiling rediscovered in 1994 that art historians now use as a reference point. Pułtusk lies about 60 km north of Warsaw, so the basilica works well as a half-day trip from the capital.

A brief history

Bishop Paweł Giżycki of Płock founded the collegiate church in 1449. It began as a single-nave church and today has three naves. In the early 16th century Bishop Erazm Ciołek funded two towers on the facade, and after 1546 the Venetian-born builder Jan Baptysta of Venice added a painted vault and a chapel for Bishop Andrzej Noskowski. A fire in 1613 destroyed much of the church, and Baroque furnishings were added during the rebuild. Pope Paul VI raised it to a minor basilica in 1975, and on 10 December 2018 the Polish president named it a Monument of History. After the cathedral, it is the most important church in the Płock diocese.

What to see inside

• The Pułtusk vault, Renaissance polychromy from the mid-16th century, rediscovered in 1994.
• The Blessed Sacrament chapel with the 1559 painting Lamentation, modeled on Michelangelo's Pietà.
• The tomb of Bishop Noskowski (1561) and other bishops' tombstones, including Giżycki's from 1463.
• Church treasures: a tower-shaped monstrance and a Holy Cross reliquary from about 1450, plus Gothic chalices.
• Furnishings: a 17th-century high altar of the Annunciation, 14 side altars and an organ with 33 stops.

How to visit

Allow 45-60 minutes for the interior and courtyard. A separate bell tower stands beside the church. This is a working church, so avoid the chancel during Mass and dress modestly. The wide naves make it easy for families with children, who often enjoy the golden altars and the wooden ceiling.

Practical information

Check visiting hours and admission prices before you go (as of October 2026). Entry to a parish church is usually free, but check bazylika.pultusk.pl or ask the parish for times outside Mass. Currency is the Polish zloty (PLN). English-language signs inside should not be expected.

Getting there

By car, Pułtusk is around an hour from Warsaw. There are car parks around the market square, but check current rules on site. The basilica is in the very center, so you can walk from your parking space.
