Modlin Fortress

Modlin Fortress (MOD-leen) in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Poland, set where the Vistula, Narew and Wkra rivers meet, about 30 km (19 miles) northwest of Warsaw. Ordered by Napoleon, enlarged by the Russian Empire and defended by Poles in 1939, it hides Europe's longest building, the haunting ruins of a giant granary and miles of ramparts. If you like military history or atmospheric ruins, it is an easy half-day trip from Warsaw.

From Napoleon to the Tsar

On December 1, 1806, Napoleon, then in Poznań, ordered fortifications at key river crossings, including Modlin. Between 1807 and 1812 French engineer General François de Chasseloup-Laubat designed the bastioned core, and in 1812 alone some 10,000–12,000 local peasants worked on site. After the failed Polish uprising of 1830–31, Russia renamed the fortress Novogeorgievsk and rebuilt it on a huge scale. After 1864 came the defensive barracks: a ring 2,250 m (1.4 miles) long designed for 20,000 soldiers, still the longest building in Europe. Two rings of forts were added before World War I.

Four sieges, one storming

Modlin was defended four times:

• 1813 – besieged from February; its Polish, French, Saxon and Württemberg garrison held out until December 1, long after Napoleon's retreat from Russia
• 1831 – during the November Uprising; surrendered on October 9
• 1915 – German troops under General Hans von Beseler, with 420 mm siege mortars, stormed the fortress between August 9 and 20
• 1939 – the Polish garrison surrendered on September 29, after Warsaw had fallen

So the often-repeated claim that Modlin was never taken by storm is a myth: 1915 was its most dramatic chapter.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The outer grounds are a residential district of the town, so walking around is free. Individual attractions are run by different operators and charge separately, in Polish złoty (PLN). The viewing tower and Powder Magazine (ul. Bema 200) open Wednesday–Thursday noon–4 pm and Friday–Sunday noon–6 pm, while the September Campaign Museum (ul. Baśki Murmańskiej 156) opens Tuesday–Sunday 10 am–5 pm. The Front Modlin underground route opens seasonally, mainly on weekends from April to October. Guided group walks cost PLN 65 per adult in 2026. Tours are mostly in Polish, so check the operators' websites (twierdzamodlin.pl and twierdzamodlin.com) for current hours, prices and any English-language options.

How to get to Modlin Fortress

Warsaw Modlin Airport, used mainly by budget airlines, is just next door, so the fortress makes a good stop on arrival or before a flight. From Warsaw, drive north on the S7 expressway or take a Koleje Mazowieckie regional train to Modlin station and continue by local bus. In season the town also runs a free tourist bus line marked T. Allow 2–3 hours for the barracks and granary, or half a day with the museum and tunnels, and wear comfortable shoes – distances are long.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you have seen Warsaw's Old Town and want something less polished. Modlin is raw and partly ruined rather than restored, which is exactly its charm. It is not ideal for visitors with limited mobility, as paths are uneven and some sites are underground.
