National parks
Kampinos National Park protects the Kampinos Forest right next to Warsaw. It is a distinctive landscape of inland dunes, wetlands, pine forests and damp meadows, included with its surroundings in the UNESCO biosphere-reserve network. The park symbol is the moose, while beavers and many bird species can also be seen here.
The most striking feature of Kampinos is the contrast between sandy inland dunes and the wet depressions between them. Dunes, marshes and meadows form a mosaic of habitats, so the landscape can change noticeably within a short stretch of trail.
The park offers more than 500 km of hiking routes, as well as cycling trails and educational paths. Granica, Palmiry and Truskaw are useful starting points. Combine a walk with the Palmiry Museum and Memorial Site or with the history of wartime resistance connected with the forest.
The terrain is generally flat, but dunes, sand and wetlands can make walking slower. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and use tick protection. Before travelling, check the park map, current access rules and any restrictions on the trails.
