Osiek nad Notecią, Greater Poland
The Museum of Folk Culture in Osiek nad Notecią (OH-shek nad no-TEH-chohn) is a peaceful open-air museum of village life in northern Wielkopolska (Greater Poland). Spread over 13 hectares (32 acres), it brings together 28 historic buildings – thatched cottages, three different windmills, a forge, a sawmill and a timber-framed church – moved here from the surrounding countryside. If you want to see how rural Poland looked a century or two ago, without the crowds of the country's big-name sights, it is a rewarding stop.
The museum grew out of a chance find. In 1972, a multi-chamber stone grave with a dozen or so funeral urns was uncovered on the site. Excavations continued until 1977 and revealed 581 cremation burials spanning the early Iron Age to the Roman period, along with pottery, tools, weapons and bronze jewelry. These finds are displayed in archaeological pavilions, and the open-air village was built up around them.
The buildings come from the regions of Krajna, Pałuki and the Noteć Forest. Highlights include:
One of the cottages now houses a café, so you can take a break midway through your walk.
Yes, if you enjoy slow travel and countryside. This is a small regional museum rather than a polished attraction: the farmsteads are scattered among meadows and birch trees, so a visit feels like a walk through an old village. Kids tend to love the windmills and the forge. Paths are largely unpaved, so strollers and wheelchairs can be hard going in places. Allow 2–3 hours if you want to look inside the cottages. Signs and staff may be mainly Polish, so a translation app is useful.
An audio guide costs PLN 2. In 2026 the museum is closed on Polish public holidays, including November 1 and 11 and December 24–25. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN). Phone: +48 67 286 60 90.
Osiek lies in the Wyrzysk district, about 40 km (25 miles) east of Piła and 5 km south of Wyrzysk, on the edge of the Noteć River valley, roughly between Piła and Bydgoszcz. Regional road 242 runs through the village, and Wyrzysk Osiek station on the Piła–Kutno railway line is nearby. A car gives you the most flexibility; the nearest international airports are in Bydgoszcz and Poznań.
Dębowa Góra hill (192 m) rises close to the village, and the Noteć valley and the Łobżonka River offer easy walking and cycling routes through quiet farmland.
