Museums
Kolbuszowa, Subcarpathian
The Museum of Folk Culture in Kolbuszowa, and above all its Ethnographic Park, is one of the largest open-air museums in southeastern Poland. On almost 30 hectares beside the small Nil River stand more than 80 wooden buildings: thatched cottages, windmills, a water mill, an inn, a manor house and a church. If you are wondering whether it is worth visiting, it is an easy, green and family-friendly day out, and entry is free on Mondays.
Kolbuszowa (kol-boo-SHOH-vah) is a small town in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, about 40 km from Rzeszów, the nearest airport, and about 160 km from Kraków. A car is the practical way to come; the park is on the edge of town. We did not find parking details on the museum's website.
The museum opened to visitors in 1959 as a regional museum run by a local society. After nationalization in 1971 it took its present name and began to focus on two folk groups, the Lasowiacy (forest dwellers of the area) and the Rzeszowiacy (from the Rzeszów region). The Ethnographic Park opened in 1978 and holds more than 80 timber buildings gathered from villages across the region.
The park has also served as a film location, including scenes for the film Wołyń (2015) and parts of Kos (2022) and the series 1670 (2023).
The park is large, so a little planning helps. Start in the entrance sector, move on to the Lasowiacy part and finish in the Rzeszowiacy part to see how farmsteads and household furnishings differed. The Lasowiacy were the people of the forests of the Sandomierz Basin, while the Rzeszowiacy came from the Rzeszów area. Wear comfortable shoes, since you will walk a fair distance across 30 hectares, and carry water and a hat in hot weather. For photos, the windmills and the mill look best in afternoon light. Cottage interiors can be cramped, so give yourself extra time on busy weekends.
The museum holds yearly outdoor events: Museum Night in May, a folk crafts presentation in June, the opening of the Lasowiacki Culture Festival in July and "Horse on the Farm" in August. Dates change each year, so check the calendar. Sundays from June to August carry higher ticket prices.
Plan 2 to 3 hours for a relaxed visit, or half a day with a workshop or event. Most of the park is outdoors, so bring a jacket for rain. Children under 7 enter free. We could not confirm rules for dogs or photography.
Other open-air museums are in Sanok and Przeworsk, and Rzeszów has an underground tourist route and a lively market square.
