Mogielica

Mogielica (1,170 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Beskid Wyspowy and a member of the Crown of Polish Mountains, known as the Queen of the range. Since 2022 the forested dome, called the Kopa by locals, has been topped by a 23-metre steel observation tower. From its platform you can survey the whole Beskid Wyspowy, the Gorce, the Beskid Sądecki, the Pieniny and, in clear weather, the Tatras.

Trails and glades

The most popular ascent follows the green trail from Przełęcz Rydza-Śmigłego in Chyszówki and takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. The shortest and easiest route is the green trail from Wyrębiska (approx. 1.5 h, though without views), longer variants start in Jurków and Szczawa on the blue trail, in Słopnice on the yellow one, and in Limanowa on the Papal Trail. Just below the summit lies Polana Stumorgowa, the largest glade of the range at over 50 hectares — its name comes from the morgen, an old unit of area.

The tower, the cross and the legends

The tower is free and open around the clock, because nothing can be seen from the forested top itself. A little to the side stands the Papal Cross, commemorating a pope who walked up Mogielica several times in his youth. Below the summit lies a boulder called the Robbers' Table: by tradition outlaws tallied their loot there, and in the 18th century the brigand Józef Baczyński hid on the mountain with his companion Świstak. Legend also has it that Mogielica was the wife of the neighbouring Łopień, separated from him by a saddle.

Practical information

A 21-kilometre loop of forest roads circles the massif — for cyclists in summer and cross-country skiers in winter; the turn-off to Polana Stumorgowa lies at the sixth kilometre. Free car parks await in Chyszówki and at the Wyrębiska forest car park. For many years August has brought the Mogielica Tourist Gathering to the summit.
