Holy Trinity Church in Witaszyce

By national road 11 running from Poznań to Bytom, not far from the palace in Witaszyce, stands the so-called Small Church — the church of the Holy Trinity. The history of the local church goes back to 1389, when it bore the dedication of St Michael.

From a wooden chapel to Classicism

A wooden church was built in 1566, and around 1683, after restoration, it was re-consecrated under the new dedication of the Holy Trinity. The present Classicist masonry church was erected in 1808 with funds from Tymoteusz Gorzeński, later archbishop of Gniezno and primate of Poland.

Life after life

After the new church of the Assumption of Mary was built in Witaszyce, the temple served auxiliary functions until the outbreak of the war; during the war it was used as a furniture warehouse, and later housed religious-education rooms. Only since 2000 have weekday Masses been celebrated here again — the church is once more a full auxiliary temple of the parish.

In practice

A wooden belfry stands next to the church, and an effective masonry gate leads into the grounds. 15–20 minutes is enough for a visit; in the same village you will also find the palace and museums, including a private Star Wars museum, so a longer stroll is worth planning.
