St Andrew the Apostle Church in Golina

The wooden Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Golina is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation and one of the more intriguing wooden monuments of Wielkopolska. The small village lies about 5 km south of Jarocin, making the church an easy stop on a short regional itinerary.

History and timber construction

The church was recorded as early as 1410, while the present building dates from the second half of the 17th century. It is oriented, single-aisled and built in a log construction; the chancel has a painted mock barrel vault by Wiktor Gosieniecki from 1935. The shingled roof and simple form show the region’s tradition of wooden sacred architecture.

Sanctuary and folk art

The focus of devotion is the image of Our Lady of Consolation, known in Golina since the 18th century. The high altar also contains paintings and sculptures of saints, while the date 1739 on the ceiling beam recalls the church’s long history. In the village, look for snutka golińska, a distinctive form of white linen embroidery.

The sanctuary is at 1 ks. Szczepana Toboły Street. No fixed tourist visiting schedule has been confirmed, so arrange interior access with the parish and avoid services when planning a stop. Allow about 30–45 minutes for the church and a short village walk. Combine the visit with Jarocin or the nearby Radoliński Palace.
