St. Nicholas Church in Chrzanów

On Mickiewicza Street 5 stands the church of St. Nicholas, the parish church of Chrzanów, whose oldest surviving part is the Gothic presbytery from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The church took its final shape in the 15th century, and its present appearance comes from a thorough rebuilding of 1912–1914.

Marbles and stained glass

The furnishing includes 19th-century altars and paintings as well as Stations of the Cross, but the most precious objects are much older: a 17th-century altar of St. Stanislaus in black marble, a Baroque baptismal font of black Dębniki marble and stained-glass windows from the final years of Austrian rule. The treasury stands out for a monstrance from the 15th century and an early Baroque chalice from the 17th century.

A papal gift and the White Eagle

A curiosity is a mosaic image of the Madonna and Child — a gift from Pope Leo XIII. The interior is complemented by a grand chandelier with the White Eagle, made in the interwar period and linked to Poland's regained independence.

The interior can be visited after arranging a time by phone — the parish number is listed on its website. The church lies close to the Chrzanów market square, so a visit pairs with a stroll through town; Tenczyn castle in Rudno and the Błędów Desert lie within some twenty kilometres.
