St John the Baptist Church in Zduny

St John the Baptist Church in Zduny is one of the most interesting Baroque monuments in southern Greater Poland. It stands on slightly raised ground north-west of the market square, surrounded by a wall and a former churchyard.

Built between 1719 and 1733

The present church was built on the initiative of parish priest Antoni Baczewski between 1719 and 1733, replacing an earlier church. In 1733 the Chapel of Divine Providence was added to the nave, with its own choir and organ. The church retains its Baroque massing, while the tower is crowned by a distinctive sheet-metal helmet with two lanterns.

Altars, pulpit and an older Pietà

The interior combines Baroque and Rococo furnishings. Look for the five Baroque altars, pulpit and baptismal font, which form a coherent ensemble. The high altar contains a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, while the altar of Our Lady of Sorrows holds a folk Pietà older than the present church. Outside, notice the pilasters, voluted gables and two-storey tower.

Practical information

The church is at 25 Kobylińska Street, close to the market square. It is an active parish; the parish website publishes current Mass times, and an interior visit is best combined with a service or arranged in advance. Walks around Zduny and routes towards the Barycz Valley start nearby. Allow 30–45 minutes for the church and a short local walk.
