Church of the Immaculate Conception in Busko-Zdrój

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Busko-Zdrój is the town’s oldest church and part of the former Norbertine complex. It stands at 8 Bohaterów Warszawy Street, between the market square and the spa park. Its history combines a medieval foundation, fires and a Baroque-Classical reconstruction.

From Dzierżko’s foundation to the Norbertines

The church and monastery are linked with the foundation of the knight Dzierżko and the arrival of Norbertine monks and nuns in the 12th century. After the fire of 1590, rebuilding was completed in 1621 and included, among other elements, the Chapel of St Anne. The monastery complex operated until 1820, when another fire led the Norbertine sisters to leave Busko.

Reconstruction and fittings

After the fire of 1820 the church was extensively rebuilt and reoriented: the former presbytery became the nave, while a new facade was turned towards the town. The high altar contains images of the Immaculate Conception, including an 18th-century painting probably attributed to Franciszek Smuglewicz. Also look for the Renaissance Chapel of St Anne with an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, the vault polychrome and the free-standing bell tower.

Visiting in the spa town

This is an active parish church, so visit the interior outside Mass. The parish lists weekday Masses at 6:30 and 18:00 from April to September, and at 6:30 and 17:00 from October to March; check the Sunday timetable and seasonal changes before travelling. Allow 30–45 minutes for the church complex and a short walk to the spa park.
