Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Dobczyce

The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians in Dobczyce is a young Neo-Romanesque church built in 1947–1949 beside the market square. Its main curiosity is the combination of a post-war body with valuable works preserved from Dobczyce’s earlier churches. Inside are a Gothic Pietà, a medieval crucifix and a stone stoup.

A new basilica with old works

The church has a three-aisled basilican layout, a Neo-Romanesque form and a tower aligned with the main nave. It was built after the war, but its furnishings give the interior a much older character. In the vestibule, look for a wooden crucifix from the second half of the 15th century and a 13th-century sandstone stoup, originally used as a baptismal font.

A Pietà linked with Veit Stoss’s circle

The most valuable work is the polychromed Pietà from the 15th century. The folds of the drapery, the treatment of Christ’s body and Mary’s expression point to the type known as “Stoss-like”, so the sculpture is associated with the circle of Veit Stoss. It shows how earlier church treasures survived in a new building.

Practical information

The church is at 1 Kościelna Street in the centre of Dobczyce. It is an active parish, so fit a visit around services and check current information locally. Combine it with the Gothic Church of St John the Baptist, castle ruins, town walls and the open-air museum. Allow about 30 minutes for the interior.
