Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, Dobczyce

From the outside it is a stone post-war basilica whose tower rises above the market square of Dobczyce. Inside, however, is a Gothic 15th-century Pietà linked to the workshop of Veit Stoss, a medieval crucifix and a 13th-century stoup – the most precious relics of the town's earlier churches. And since 2016 a 38-stop organ brought from St Paul's Church in Aachen has played from the gallery.

History: a new church for the "new town"

For centuries the parish church of Dobczyce was St John the Baptist's on the Old Town hill – the medieval chronicler Jan Długosz already mentions it. In the 19th century, however, the town grew down in the valley, far from the "old town". On weekdays Mass was said in a chapel by the market square – first wooden, then brick – and people walked up to the hilltop church only on Sundays and holy days.

In 1947, led by the parish priest Father Franciszek Kwiecień, work began on a new church, and by 1949 parishioners were already using it. The builder's grave lies just behind the chancel. The church waited more than sixty years for its consecration – Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz consecrated it only on 27 October 2013. In 2013–2018 it was thoroughly renovated: the frescoes were restored, a granite floor was laid and ten stained-glass windows were fitted in the round nave windows.

What to see inside

• The 15th-century Pietà – a painted sculpture in the triptych of the high altar. The "spoon-shaped" folds of the drapery, the anatomy of Christ's body and the Virgin's facial expression are hallmarks of the so-called Stoss type.
• A Gothic crucifix from the second half of the 15th century and an 18th-century figure of the Sorrowful Christ – in the vestibule.
• The 13th-century sandstone stoup, originally a baptismal font – the oldest object in the church.
• A red marble font in late Renaissance style, funded in the 17th century by Sebastian Lubomirski, the royal governor (starost) of Dobczyce.
• Wall paintings of 1984–1988 by the Kraków artist Jerzy Witkowski – the miracles and teaching of Jesus.
• Stained glass with a "gallery of saints", including St Faustina, St Brother Albert, St Padre Pio, St John Paul II and Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko.

Interesting facts

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II, visited the Dobczyce parish many times. A 350-kilogram bell used for funerals hangs in the tower, and the garden between the church and the presbytery holds Stations of the Cross, completed in 2018 with the missing 14th station.

Practical information

The church is at ul. Kościelna 1, above the market square. According to the parish it is open all day, with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel of Our Lady of Fátima (daily 7:30–18:00). As of October 2026, Sunday Masses are at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30, 13:00 and 18:00, weekday Masses at 6:30, 7:00 and 18:00. Visit outside services. Tripto tip

Dobczyce lies about 30 km south-east of Kraków. From the market square it is a few minutes uphill to the Old Town: the castle ruins with the PTTK Regional Museum, the open-air museum and the Neoclassical Church of St John the Baptist with a Gothic bell from 1504. If no service is under way, walk closer to the high altar to study the "spoon-shaped" folds of the Pietà's drapery.
