Szczyrzyc Cistercian Abbey

Szczyrzyc Cistercian Abbey lies in a valley among the hills of the Island Beskids and is one of the region’s most important religious monuments. Cistercians have been present here since the Middle Ages, and the monastery remains a living community. A visit combines the monastic church, garden, Cistercian heritage and an unusual museum of military objects, sacred art and local culture.

Church and Cistercian heritage

The monastic church is the centre of the complex and still serves worship. Look for its architecture, furnishings and links with the Cistercian landscape of the valley. The garden and St Stanislaus Square provide a peaceful extension to the visit, especially when the museum is temporarily unavailable.

Monastery museum

The collection includes sacred art, military objects, coins, maps, weapons, minerals, regional costumes and memorabilia connected with the writer Władysław Orkan. Another unusual section explains the history of brewing at the monastery. It is a worthwhile stop for visitors who want to see not only a church but also material traces of the community and the surrounding region.

The Cistercians’ official website currently reports that the monastery museum is closed temporarily for renovation; it invites visitors to the church, garden and a tour lasting about 40 minutes. Check what is available on your chosen date. Large groups wishing to visit the Cistercian brewery must arrange it in advance. Szczyrzyc combines well with Island Beskids trails and the Stradomka valley.
