St Rosalia Chapel in Sławno is a wooden cemetery chapel built on a former cone-shaped earthwork, on the eastern edge of the village in Kiszkowo commune. It was completed in 1785 and is one of the most interesting examples of wooden sacred architecture around the Zielonka Forest.

A wooden heritage building

The chapel has a log structure, a single nave and a narrower chancel closed on three sides. A tower with a distinctive onion-shaped cupola and lantern rises above the western porch. The roofs are covered with wooden shingles and the elevations with vertical boards. The main altar, with an image of St Rosalia, was made in the same year as the chapel.

Interior and crypts

Painted garlands, rosettes and geometric and floral decoration survive on the ceiling, upper walls and rood beam. The main altar contains an image of the patron saint; the rood beam carries a sculpture of St Barbara with putti leaning on skulls and holding hourglasses. The founder, Father Józef Sztolzman, is buried beneath the chancel, while a crypt beneath the nave is associated with the Chełmicki family.

Cemetery and practical information

The oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1857. The small cemetery helps place the chapel in the context of a rural necropolis and an older earthwork. Interior access is limited: the chapel belongs to the parish of St Nicholas in Sławno and is not permanently open for tourists. Contact the parish before travelling, remain quiet and do not enter the crypts. The building is part of the Wooden Churches Trail around the Zielonka Forest.
