Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica (Ostrów Lednicki)

You reach the island of Ostrów Lednicki by ferry, and waiting for you are walls that date back to Mieszko I, Poland's first historical ruler: the ruins of a stone palace with a chapel and two baptismal pools that make this one of the strongest candidates for the site of Poland's baptism in 966. The Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica has protected the island since 1969, and since 2026 it also has a new headquarters in Dziekanowice with a modern exhibition on the birth of the Polish state. It is one of the key stops on the Piast Route between Poznań and Gniezno.

History: the island of rulers

Under Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, Ostrów Lednicki was one of the state's main defensive and administrative centres. The stronghold on the southern part of the island was enclosed by a timber-and-earth rampart about 500 m long, still up to 8 m high in places. Two wooden bridges led to the lake shores – the western one about 438 m long, the eastern about 187 m – built, according to tree-ring dating, in the winter and spring of 963–964. They rank among the largest early medieval crossings in this part of Europe.

The island's heyday ended in 1038 with the raid of the Bohemian duke Bretislav I, who burned the stronghold and destroyed the bridges. Settlement continued into the 13th–14th centuries, but the island never regained its importance. The museum was founded on 1 January 1969, and on 8 September 1994 Ostrów Lednicki was declared a Historic Monument of Poland.

What to see on Ostrów Lednicki

• The palatium and chapel – ruins of a rectangular palace (32 × 14 m) with walls up to 3 m high and an adjoining chapel on a Greek-cross plan.
• The baptismal pools – uncovered in 1988 and 1989 in the chapel floor, each shaped like half a cross.
• The stronghold church – remains of a single-nave church with two stone tombs, considered one of the first ducal burial places in Poland.
• The ramparts and a path around the island with views over the lake.
• On the mainland: a small open-air museum with reconstructions and sculptures by Julian Boss-Gosławski, including Mieszko I with his warriors.

The new museum building in Dziekanowice

In August 2026 the museum opened its new headquarters (Dziekanowice 32) with the permanent exhibition "Secrets of Poland's Beginnings – Ostrów Lednicki", covering about 1,000 m². It displays more than a thousand original archaeological finds, dioramas and facial reconstructions of the island's inhabitants based partly on DNA research. The highlight is the original timbers of the bridges from 963–964. The exhibition can only be visited on a guided tour, starting on the hour and lasting about 60 minutes.

Interesting facts

About 300 weapons have been recovered from the lake bed – one of the largest collections of early medieval arms in Europe; some swords may point to Scandinavian warriors in the duke's retinue. In 2017 divers found traces of a third bridge, leading to the neighbouring islet of Ledniczka and dated to 913 or 914.

Tickets in 2026: Ostrów Lednicki PLN 25 (PLN 35 with audio guide), reduced PLN 17/20; museum headquarters PLN 30, reduced PLN 20; children under 7 go free and parking is free. Allow half a day for the island and the new building, and book the headquarters tour online in advance for a specific time slot, as places are limited. The island is best visited in the warmer months, since the ferry crossing and the walk along the ramparts are fully outdoors. Check opening hours on the museum website before you go.
