Lednica Landscape Park

Lednica Landscape Park protects the countryside around Lake Lednica ("led-NEE-tsa") in western Poland, halfway between Poznań and Gniezno on the Piast Trail. It's where Poland's story begins: on the island of Ostrów Lednicki stood a 10th-century residence of the first Piast rulers, which some historians link to the baptism of Duke Mieszko I's circle in 966. Add a lakeside open-air village museum and you have one of the best day trips from Poznań.

Where it is and how to get there

The park lies in the Greater Poland region, about 36 km (around 45 minutes) east of Poznań and under half an hour west of Gniezno, Poland's first capital. National road 5 between Poznań and Gniezno runs along its southern edge, and regional trains stop at Lednogóra station. Berlin is about 320 km (roughly 3.5 hours) away by car. Parking at the museum sites is free.

Why it matters

The landscape park was created in 1988 and covers 7,618 hectares of lakes, fields, villages and patches of pine forest. Around 350 archaeological sites are known here, including four early medieval strongholds. The star is Ostrów Lednicki, the largest of the lake's five islands, declared a national Historic Monument in 1994.

In the 10th century the island held a fortified ducal seat. Two wooden bridges — 438 m and 187 m long, dated by tree rings to the winter and spring of 963–964 — connected it to both shores. The Bohemian duke Bretislaus destroyed the bridges and burned the stronghold in 1038.

What to see

• Ostrów Lednicki: ruins of a stone palace (palatium) measuring 32 by 14 m and a chapel on a Greek-cross plan with baptismal pools, plus the earthen rampart, still up to 8 m high. You reach the island by a short ferry ride.
• Greater Poland Ethnographic Park in Dziekanowice, on the lakeshore: an open-air museum of wooden rural buildings recreating a 19th-century village of the region.
• Museum headquarters in Dziekanowice, opened to visitors in late summer 2026, with the permanent exhibition "Secrets of Poland's Beginnings — Ostrów Lednicki," a café and a terrace overlooking the lake and island.
• Lednica Fields in Imiołki, with the fish-shaped Gate of the Third Millennium — since 1997 the venue of a large Catholic youth gathering on the eve of Pentecost.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, according to the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica (prices in Polish złoty, PLN):

• Ostrów Lednicki and the Ethnographic Park (Sept 1–Oct 31): Tuesday–Friday 9 am–5 pm, weekends and holidays 10 am–5 pm; closed Mondays. Both close for the season from November 2 until spring.
• Ferry: runs until October 31, every 30 minutes; the last boat to the island leaves 40 minutes before closing.
• Admission: PLN 25 adult / PLN 17 reduced for each site (PLN 35 / 20 with an audio guide); museum headquarters PLN 30 / 20; children under 7 free. Wednesday is a free-admission day.
• Guided tours in a foreign language cost PLN 250 per group and must be booked in advance.

The landscape park itself is open year-round and free.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes — especially if you're following the Piast Trail from Poznań to Gniezno. Allow 3–5 hours for the island and the open-air museum. Families will find plenty of space to roam, and the ferry crossing is a highlight for kids.
