Fish Gate

Brama Ryba, also called the Gate of the Third Millennium, is a steel fish-shaped structure on the Lednica Fields beside Lake Lednica. It is the symbolic centre of the Lednica 2000 youth meetings and one of the most recognisable landmarks of Greater Poland. Its fish form refers to the ichthys, an early Christian sign associated with Christ. Passing beneath the gate during the meetings has a religious meaning.

Lednica Fields and the meetings

The gate is the central feature of the large Lednica Fields. Since 1997, the annual Lednica 2000 National Youth Meetings have taken place here, initiated by the Dominican friar Jan Góra. The climax of the event is the participants’ passage beneath the Fish Gate.

What to see nearby

Other facilities connected with the meetings stand nearby, while Ostrów Lednicki lies across the lake, with remains of an early-medieval residential and religious complex and a museum. The fields are open outdoor grounds, but access, parking and traffic arrangements change during major events.

Practical information

The gate stands by Droga III Tysiąclecia on the Lednica Fields, about 20 km west of Gniezno. It is an outdoor attraction; viewing the structure from accessible grounds is free, but do not assume guaranteed 24-hour access. Check the Lednica 2000 calendar and organiser’s notices before travelling. The ground may be grassy and uneven, and the site becomes very crowded during the main meeting. Do not climb the structure and follow fences and staff instructions.
