Cycling the Jura — Bike Routes of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland

The Kraków-Częstochowa Upland is a belt of highland between Kraków and Częstochowa, full of white limestone outcrops, ravines and castle ruins. Its varied relief — small hills following one after another — makes cycling demanding but rewarding.

Trails for everyone

The region is crossed by the Eagle Nests Cycling Trail — a red-marked route of 190 km leading from Częstochowa near Jasna Góra to Kraków. Beyond it, try shorter local loops, for example around Żarki, or routes through the Będkowska and Kobylańska valleys near Kraków.

Sights along the way

The routes pass the upland's most important castles: Olsztyn, Mirów and Bobolice, and Ogrodzieniec in Podzamcze. On the way you will also pass limestone crags, caves open to visitors and pleasant towns with accommodation — Pilica or Złoty Potok.

Practical information

The best riding periods are May–June and September–October, when heat does not punish the climbs. Many sections are gravel or forest tracks — gravel or MTB bikes work best. Plan to finish near a railway station: the Kraków–Częstochowa and Kraków–Olkusz lines make the return easy.
