Caves of the Little Beskids

The caves of the Little Beskids form part of the mountain landscape of the Little Beskids Landscape Park. The best-known is Komoniecki Grotto on the western slopes of Pośredni Groń. The area also contains the Czarne Działy caves and Wietrzna Dziura. These are mainly geological monuments, not a network of prepared underground visitor routes.

Komoniecki Grotto

The grotto is a large rock niche formed at a step in a mountain stream. Its opening is about 15 metres wide and up to 2 metres high, while the chamber covers roughly 115 m². In early spring, water flowing over the entrance can freeze into striking icicles. The site lies on the western slopes of Pośredni Groń, near the village of Las.

Czarne Działy and other sites

Czarne Działy 1 and 2 are protected as natural monuments. Wietrzna Dziura, between Magurka Wilkowicka and Czupel, is a small cave about 33 metres long. Their value lies in their geology and protected mountain setting; inventory measurements should not be mistaken for a ready-made tourist attraction.

Planning safely

Komoniecki Grotto is relatively easier to reach, but the ground can be slippery after rain. Other caves require experience, proper lighting and a careful assessment of conditions; never descend into vertical entrances without the skills and protection to do so. For most visitors, the best plan is a mountain hike with views of legally accessible formations from outside. Do not damage formations or disturb wildlife.
