Church of St. Matthias in Andrychów

By the market square of Andrychów stands the Church of St. Matthias the Apostle — the oldest church in town and a trace of its medieval beginnings. The parish was erected in 1325, and 14th-century documents mention the settlement under the name Henrychów. Today's masonry church dates from 1646 and was extended several times afterwards.

Structure and furnishings

It is an oriented, three-aisled building with a tower added on the west side. Among the furnishings, note the Baroque baptismal font from the 18th century, the painting of Our Lady Queen of the Holy Rosary made in 1725 for Salomea Czerna, then the owner of the town, and the Holy Family painting from 1886.

Crypts and dripstone

By the church survive 18th-century crypts: the brick one of St. Adalbert and the stone one of the Holy Family. An unusual curiosity are the calcareous dripstones hanging from the ceiling of a grotto in the interior — a phenomenon rarely encountered in church furnishings.

Practical information

The church stands at Rynek 37, in the heart of Andrychów at the foot of the Little Beskids. A visit to the interior takes a quarter of an hour and combines well with a stroll around the square; the town is also a convenient base for the trails of the Little Beskids and for Leskowiec.
