St Matthias Church, Andrychów

St Matthias Church is the parish church in the centre of Andrychów, at the foot of the Little Beskids. The masonry church dates from 1646 and was rebuilt and extended many times over the following centuries. Its greatest treasure is the image of Our Lady Queen of the Rosary from 1725, crowned with papal crowns in 2025.

Building and furnishings

It is an oriented, three-aisled building with a tower on the west side; two chapels were added in 1725. Wide steps lead up to the church, and a Baroque clock tower rises above the façade. Inside, look out for:

• the image of Our Lady Queen of the Rosary from 1725, painted at the request of Salomea Czerna, then owner of Andrychów,
• a Baroque baptismal font from the 18th century,
• a painting of the Holy Family by Piotr Stachiewicz from 1886.

Crypts with dripstones

Two crypts from the early 18th century survive beside the church. The older one, built of stone, is dedicated to the Holy Family and still has stalactite-like dripstone formations. The younger, brick crypt is dedicated to St Adalbert. If you would like to see the crypts, ask at the parish office.

The 2025 coronation

On 21 June 2025 the image of Our Lady of the Rosary, known as the Lady of Andrychów, was crowned with papal crowns. The Mass on Mickiewicz Square was celebrated by Roman Pindel, Bishop of Bielsko-Żywiec, and afterwards the image returned in procession to the parish church. It crowned centuries of Marian devotion here.

This is a working church, so visit outside service times. 15–20 minutes is enough to see the interior. A visit combines easily with a walk around central Andrychów and an outing into the Little Beskids.
