Stronghold Reconstruction in Będkowice

The Archaeological Reserve in Będkowice lies at the foot of Mount Ślęża, between Będkowice and Strzegomiany, a few kilometres from Sobótka. It preserves a Ślężanie settlement complex from the 8th–11th centuries: a stronghold, settlement remains and a nearby barrow cemetery. The Ślęża Massif landscape meets tangible traces of the early Middle Ages.

The Ślężanie stronghold

The stronghold has an oval plan and was enclosed by an earth-and-timber rampart and dry moat. The reserve includes reconstructed timber dwellings with log construction. Nearby barrows survive, while information boards explain the settlement layout and former life. This is a small fortified settlement, not a large castle reconstruction.

What you can see

The highlights are two reconstructed huts, a well, enclosures, ramparts and the moat. Wooden shelters provide a place to rest. Combine the visit with an ascent of Ślęża and other traces of Ślężanie culture, including stone sculptures and cult features in the massif. It also works well as a family stop for outdoor archaeology.

Access and planning your visit

The reserve is by the road between Strzegomiany and Będkowice. Check approach and parking before travelling, as the site lies outside a compact settlement. The municipality does not publish a fixed price list or regular hours, so do not expect museum-style ticket service. Respect ramparts, huts and barrows: do not climb structures, move stones or leave the designated area.
