Góra Kamieńsk (Kamieńsk Mountain)

The highest hill in central Poland was not shaped by the Ice Age but by the communist-era economy: it was piled up by the spreaders of the Bełchatów lignite mine. Góra Kamieńska rises to 405.6 m above sea level and about 195 m above its surroundings, and on its slope is the OSiR Góra Kamieńsk leisure centre, nicknamed the "Adrenaline Factory": a chairlift, an alpine coaster, a tubing run and bike trails, plus a ski slope in winter.

Where the mountain came from

The hill is the external spoil heap of the Bełchatów mine. Dumping began on 6 June 1977 and ended in November 1993, when the mine started storing all its overburden inside the pit. In that time the spreaders moved around 1,350 million m³ of earth that had covered the coal seams. The hill covers 1,480 ha, and its current name was set in 1999 at the request of the Kamieńsk town council – "Góra Kamieńsk" is now the name of the leisure centre rather than the hill.

Turbines of the Kamieńsk wind farm turn on the summit. Until 2012 there was also a small civil airfield, Kamieńsk-Orla Góra, on the northern slope.

What to do

• Chairlift – a four-seater, 760 m long; in summer it also carries bikes to the top.
• Alpine coaster and tubing run – children aged 3–8 may only ride with an adult.
• Inflatable slide and six-station trampoline for younger children.
• Bike trails – three routes totalling 42 km of varying difficulty, including downhill tracks.
• In winter – a floodlit ski run with artificial snow and two button lifts (700 m and 160 m).

Summer 2026 prices

According to the centre's price list: chairlift up and down PLN 20 (reduced PLN 15), one coaster or tubing ride PLN 15, passes for 5 / 10 / 20 rides PLN 60 / 90 / 140. The inflatable slide and the trampoline cost PLN 15 for 10 minutes. Children under 3 ride the chairlift free. There are also combined packages, such as the chairlift plus three rides for PLN 40.

Opening hours (as of October 2026)

The centre's homepage says that in October it is open at weekends 10:00–18:00; the chairlift runs only at weekends and on public holidays. On weekdays, because the snowmaking system is being renovated, only pre-booked organised groups are admitted. The contact page gives different summer hours (daily 11:00–19:00), so it is worth phoning ahead.

Tripto tip

Allow 2–3 hours for rides and views, or half a day with a bike. Come on a clear day: from the highest point in central Poland you can see a long way in every direction. Take your bike up on the chairlift and ride down the trails to save your legs on the climb. The centre's address is Huby Ruszczyńskie, 97-360 Kamieńsk (Łódź Province).
