Muskau Bend UNESCO Global Geopark

The Muskau Bend Geopark is a German-Polish geological area on both sides of the Lusatian Neisse. Its centrepiece is a push moraine formed by the ice sheet around 340,000 years ago. Folded ground, former mines and post-mining lakes create an unusual landscape. It is a strong choice near Łęknica for geology, cycling and photography.

What makes the Muskau Bend special

Lignite mining created an anthropogenic lake district: turquoise, green and rusty ponds lie among forests and industrial traces. A key site is the former Babina Mine, with a geo-tourist trail and viewpoints. The geopark joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2015. Poland also has the Świętokrzyski Geopark and Land of Extinct Volcanoes in the network.

How to explore it

There is no single entrance or shared ticket. Plan several stops by bicycle or car and use marked trails, maps and viewpoints. If time allows, include the German side and Muskau Park in Bad Muskau. Some sections are forested or uneven, so wear sturdy shoes for longer walks.

Practical information

The Polish Geopark Tourist Information Point at 25 Wybrzeżna Street in Łęknica is seasonal: 10:00–16:00 in April and October, 09:00–17:00 from 1 May to 30 September, and closed in winter. Muskau Guides work year-round by prior arrangement. The Cultural and Educational Centre at 18 T. Kościuszki Street has separate seasonal hours. The landscape areas are outdoors and free to access.
