Babina Former Mine Geo-Trail in Łęknica

The Babina Former Mine Geo-Trail runs through a disused lignite and ceramic-clay mine between Nowe Czaple and Łęknica. It is one of the most distinctive routes in the Muskau Bend Geopark: former workings filled with water, while different ground compositions gave the ponds shades of brown, red, green, turquoise and blue. The trail combines geology, mining history and a quiet walk through a forest landscape.

Highlights

The best-known site is Lake Africa, named for its continent-like shape. A wooden viewing tower stands above the lake; it is about 40 metres high and has 144 steps. Educational boards, viewpoints, benches and rest areas line the trail. The colours reflect geological conditions and mining remains, not a bathing area, so swimming is not part of the visit.

Trail and access

The basic section between Nowe Czaple and Łęknica is about 4–5 km; branches and approaches can extend the outing to roughly 10 km. You can walk or cycle, but the setting is a forest and some surfaces are uneven. A sturdy all-terrain pushchair is more suitable than a lightweight stroller for small children. Access is free, with no single ticket office or entrance gate.

Practical information

The trail can be entered from Łęknica, Nowe Czaple or the forest car park by regional road 350 towards Przewoźniki. The forestry service lists three forest car parks; check current access and road conditions before travelling. Bring water, comfortable shoes and sun protection. The tower, surfaces or individual sections may be temporarily closed, so follow signs on site.
