Wooden Church in Stara Wieś

Key information

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Stara Wieś, near Wilamowice, is one of the most valuable historic wooden churches in this part of the Beskids. The present church was built in 1522; dendrochronological research confirms that the chancel, nave and tower date from the same period. It is an oriented, single-nave log church surrounded by characteristic soboty, covered walkways around the walls. Walk around the exterior to see the free-standing tower, wooden fence and mature trees.

What to see

The church also reflects an extensive renovation carried out in 1787, when Baroque features were added, including the onion-shaped tower cupola, pilasters and cornices. Inside are Renaissance and Baroque wall paintings and a Late Gothic Crucifixion panel from the early 16th century. The furnishings include an 18th-century main altarpiece image, two side altars, a Rococo baptismal font, pulpit and rood beam with a Passion group. The polychromy and furnishings were conserved between 2009 and 2013.

Visiting and practical tips

This is an active parish church. The exterior, tower and soboty can be viewed from outside; arrange interior access in advance with the parish office. No fixed sightseeing hours or admission fee have been confirmed. The parish is at ul. Ks. Wojtyłki 3, 43-330 Stara Wieś; phone 33 845 72 04 or 602 891 196. Mass is celebrated on Saturdays at 18:00 and on Sundays and holidays at 08:00, 09:30, 11:00 and 15:30. Keep quiet during services and ask before taking photographs.
