Gdańsk House in Węgrów

Dom Gdański stands on the northern side of Rynek Mariacki in Węgrów. It is a Baroque inn and former trading house of Gdańsk merchants from the first half of the 18th century, recognisable by its mansard roof with dormers and a wavy gable topped with a star. The building is an important part of the historic market square and a good starting point for exploring central Węgrów.

Why it is called Dom Gdański

Węgrów stood at a crossroads of trade routes, and merchants from Gdańsk maintained a trading post here. Grain and cattle were among the goods traded, while the town connected the local market with routes towards Warsaw, Lithuania, Gdańsk and the south. The name recalls Węgrów’s links with long-distance trade by land and river.

Library and exhibitions

Dom Gdański houses the August Cieszkowski Municipal Public Library, a Regional Collections Cabinet and the Museum of Podlasie Textile with local folk art. A temporary exhibition gallery operates in the cellars, and the building hosts cultural events and tourist information. It is not a museum with one permanent ticket system: access depends on library hours and the programme.
