Old Lutheran Cemetery in Węgrów

At the end of Ewangelicka Street in Węgrów stands a larch-wood church which — according to a tradition still alive today — was built in a single day. Around it lies the old Protestant cemetery with late 17th-century gravestones of Scottish merchants, among the oldest tomb slabs in the region. It is a little-known but telling trace of the town's multi-faith past.

History: a church built in one day

In 1678 townspeople set fire to the earlier Calvinist church of 1634. Rebuilding was made possible by a privilege from Bishop Stanisław Witwicki of Łuck, and according to tradition the condition was that the new church be erected within one day, as building Protestant churches was then forbidden. So in 1679 the present church was raised. The one-day story is best treated as tradition, but it captures the religious tensions of the time.

From 1679 to 1776 the building was a Lutheran parish church, later a branch of the Warsaw Holy Trinity parish and the town's main Protestant church until a new one was built in 1838. Today it serves as a cemetery chapel. The cemetery once lay in fields in Węgrów's Protestant quarter; over time the town grew around it.

Scots in Węgrów

In the first half of the 17th century Scots fleeing religious war at home settled on the Radziwiłł estates, protected by Prince Bogusław Radziwiłł, a well-known patron of Protestants. Grey sandstone slabs of the Scottish families Campbell and Huey dated 1692, 1698 and 1700 survive in the cemetery. The language of the inscriptions shows that those buried here had already become Polonised.

What to see

• The log church of larch beams on a stone base, clad in boards, with a shingle roof and a small bell turret topped by a wrought-iron cross. From outside it looks like a wooden house.
• The 1692 gravestone of Archebald Campbell — the only one decorated with a coat of arms, identical to that of the chiefs of the Campbell of Argyll clan. At the bottom are a skull, an hourglass and a Latin saying that what befell the deceased today will befall the passer-by tomorrow.
• Epitaphs beginning with D.O.M. and the words “Tu lezy” (Here lies) — written without Polish diacritics, revealing the hand of simple stonemasons.
• The graves of pastor Karol Tetfejler (d. 1838) and teacher Edward Marski, a January Uprising insurgent killed at the Battle of Węgrów on 3 March 1863.

Tripto tips

This is an active denominational cemetery, not a museum: the church is mainly seen from outside, and its interior has lost its original furnishings. 20–30 minutes is enough for a walk. Keep quiet and do not step on the graves. Many inscriptions are worn, so they are easiest to read in raking light, in the morning or late afternoon.
