Basilica of the Assumption in Węgrów

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Węgrów is a Baroque church on the eastern side of the market square. History and architecture

The present church was built after the earlier temple burned in 1703. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1703 and 1707 for Jan Dobrogost Krasiński. The design is attributed to Tylman van Gameren, although Jan Reisner is also mentioned in historical descriptions. Two Gothic towers with loopholes and old buttresses survived from the earlier church, giving the building an unusual combination of Gothic and Baroque forms.

What to see inside

The main highlights are the frescoes and illusionistic altars painted by Michelangelo Palloni in 1707–1708. The basilica also contains works by Szymon Czechowicz, the painting The Dance of Death and a portrait gallery of benefactors in the sacristy.
