Church in Szczawne

Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God

On a hillside above the Osława River, about 150 metres from the road between Zagórz and Komańcza, stands the wooden church in Szczawne. It was built with its bell tower in 1888–1889 as a Greek Catholic church. Today it is an Orthodox filial church of the parish in Morochów and a monument on the Subcarpathian Wooden Architecture Route.

Lemko architecture and polychrome

The complex consists of an east-facing three-part church, a free-standing wooden bell tower and a cemetery enclosed by a stone wall. The church has a log structure, stone foundation, a shared roof ridge and a low tower above the narthex. The interior has an unusual 1925 polychrome painted by artists associated with the Odrodzenie Society in Przemyśl. This interior decoration is the main reason to arrange a visit inside.

Szczawne on a church route

The church stands outside the village centre on a slope above the Osława valley. Combine it with a drive through historic Lemko lands, including Rzepedź, Turzańsk and Komańcza. This is a quiet cemetery and active church, so plan a respectful stop.

Address: Szczawne, 38-541 Szczawne. The church can be viewed from outside; no fixed tourist hours are confirmed. Interior visits require advance arrangements with the Orthodox parish in Morochów: +48 501 222 561 or 13 462 90 61. No confirmed ticket price is available. Do not enter the cemetery during services, photograph only with permission and dress respectfully.
