Byczyna is a small town in Kluczbork County, about 15 kilometres north of Kluczbork, in the north of the Opole region. It is one of the few Polish towns whose medieval defensive walls survive almost intact: the oval ring is more than 900 metres long. You can walk around it along the moat, passing the Sand Tower and the Polish and German Gates. In the centre stands the Gothic St Nicholas Church, and nearby Biskupice has a wooden church. In 1588 the army of Jan Zamoyski defeated Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, a claimant to the Polish throne, near Byczyna. The town's knightly traditions live on at Gród Byczyna, a reconstructed wooden stronghold that hosts knights' tournaments. In summer you can relax by the Brzózki reservoir in Biskupice. Half a day covers the town. Come by car on national road 11 or by bus from Kluczbork. May to September is best.
