Kraków Gate in Szydłów

The Kraków Gate in Szydłów is the town’s main surviving entrance through its medieval walls. Together with the walls, it forms one of the most valuable parts of Szydłów’s historic layout, which is often nicknamed the “Polish Carcassonne”. Built in the second half of the 14th century, the gate faced the road from Kraków. Its stone gate tower retains defensive features, while later alterations gave it a distinctive Renaissance attic with two round turrets.

What to look for

Inside the passage, you can imagine how the town was once secured: wooden gates, a stone portcullis and a drawbridge protected the entrance. A square foregate stood outside and was linked to the main gate by a narrow neck. The gate is part of a complex with around 700 metres of surviving wall sections. Not every part of the fortification is open at all times.

Visiting Szydłów

Viewing the Kraków Gate itself does not require an admission ticket. It is an outdoor monument without separate fixed opening hours. Treat it as the starting point for a walk through the wider complex: the royal castle, Treasury, Church of St Ladislaus, synagogue and Castle Gate are nearby. Practical information

The gate stands at 3 Kazimierza Wielkiego Street in Szydłów’s historic centre. Stone surfaces may be uneven, and entering the walls requires care. Do not climb fragile masonry and follow any temporary closures or staff instructions.
