Church of the Assumption in Kurozwęki

In Kurozwęki, in the shadow of the nearby palace, stands the Gothic church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built around 1470. Its history mirrors the turbulence of the epochs: from the arrival of the canons regular to a Protestant episode during the Reformation.

The canons regular of the Lateran were brought here in 1487 by the royal treasurer Piotr z Kurozwęk. In the Reformation era the Lanckoroński family converted to Protestantism and turned the church into a place of Protestant worship, expelling the canons. When the Lanckorońscy returned to Catholicism, the canons came back to Kurozwęki in 1619.

Gothic cross-ribbed vaults with bosses decorate the presbytery. Later epochs contributed the late-Renaissance main altar and Rococo side altars. A separate attraction is the Lanckoroński funerary chapel from the early 17th century: square in plan, built of stone ashlar, crowned with a dome and lantern and covered with very rich stucco decoration.

The church preserves a 15th-century painting of Christ of Sorrow with Mary and St. John — peculiar and expressive in its rendering. The church stands on Kościelna Street, and after your visit it is worth seeing the nearby palace of Kurozwęki.
