Białowieża National Park

Białowieża National Park (say "byah-wo-VYEH-zhah") in far eastern Poland protects the best-preserved part of the Białowieża Forest, one of the last large fragments of the primeval lowland forest that once covered much of Europe. It is the place to see European bison, the continent's heaviest land animal, and to walk with a guide among giant fallen trunks left to decay naturally. The forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Belarus, and it feels unlike any park you may know.

Where it is and how to get there

The village of Białowieża sits right by the Belarusian border in the Podlaskie region. The nearest city is Białystok, about 85 km away (roughly 1.5 hours by car); from Warsaw expect well over 230 km and around 3.5 to 4 hours. Warsaw Chopin Airport is the most practical international gateway. The last stretch runs through the town of Hajnówka on regional road 689, and that same road passes the Bison Show Reserve about 3 km before the village, so it makes sense to stop there first. A car gives you the most flexibility; regional buses are limited.

Why it matters

Protection began in 1921, when foresters set aside a "Reserve" section of the forest. A national park followed in 1932 and was re-established after World War II in 1947, which makes it Poland's oldest. Today it covers about 10,500 hectares, more than half under strict protection. UNESCO listed it in 1979, and the site was later extended across the border into Belarus. The European bison was saved from extinction largely thanks to breeding here, and animals descended from Białowieża stock now live across Europe.

Things to do in Białowieża National Park

• Bison Show Reserve: large enclosures with bison, elk, red deer, wild boar, wolves, Polish konik horses and żubroń (a bison and cattle cross). Plan 1.5 to 2 hours.
• Natural History and Forest Museum in the Palace Park: a good introduction to the forest ecosystem, with an observation tower and an optional audio guide.
• Strict reserve walk: a roughly three-hour guided route to the fallen Jagiełło Oak through the wildest part of the forest. This is the highlight for most visitors.

Seeing a bison in the wild is never guaranteed, so do not skip the show reserve.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

All prices are in Polish zloty (PLN).

• Bison Show Reserve: PLN 25 adult, PLN 15 reduced. Open daily 9 am to 5 pm from April 16 to October 15; Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 4 pm the rest of the year.
• Museum: PLN 16 adult, PLN 10 reduced. Summer season Monday to Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm, weekends until 5 pm; off-season Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 4 pm, last entry one hour before closing.
• Strict reserve: PLN 10 adult, PLN 5 reduced, plus the guide's fee. Access from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Everything is closed on January 1 and 7, November 1, December 25 and on Easter Monday (Catholic and Orthodox). Tickets can be bought online up to 7 days ahead. The park itself does not assign guides: book a BPN-licensed guide from the official list first, and ask for an English-speaking one when booking.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you value nature over quick sightseeing. Give it at least a full day, ideally with a night in Białowieża so you can be in the forest early. Bring insect repellent and sturdy shoes in summer. Access to the strict reserve is suspended during storms and strong winds, so keep an eye on park announcements.
