Basilica of the Assumption in Krzeszów

The Basilica of the Assumption in Krzeszów (say "KSHEH-shoof") is the centerpiece of a former Cistercian abbey often called the "European Pearl of the Baroque." Hidden in a small village in the foothills of the Sudetes in Lower Silesia, it is one of the most spectacular Baroque ensembles in Central Europe: a twin-towered basilica, a second church covered wall to wall in frescoes, and the mausoleum of medieval Piast dukes. The abbey is a Polish Monument of History and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Where it is and how to get there

Krzeszów lies in southwestern Poland, about 7 km from the town of Kamienna Góra and roughly 100 km southwest of Wrocław, the nearest major city and airport. The drive from Wrocław takes about 1.5–2 hours via Bolków or Świebodzice. The Czech border is close, so Krzeszów also pairs well with a trip to the Krkonoše/Karkonosze mountains. A car is by far the easiest option: public transport reaches Kamienna Góra, but local buses onward are infrequent, so check timetables in advance.

A short history

Duchess Anna, widow of Duke Henry the Pious, brought Benedictine monks here in 1242. In 1292 Duke Bolko I the Strict replaced them with Cistercians and made the abbey the burial place of his dynasty. The golden age began after 1660 under Abbot Bernard Rosa, who dreamed of turning Krzeszów into a "New Jerusalem."

The present basilica was built remarkably fast: the cornerstone was laid on March 6, 1728, and the church was consecrated in July 1735. Prague sculptor Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff, fresco painter Georg Wilhelm Neunhertz and Peter Brandl, who painted the high altar, all worked here; the architect is not known for certain.

Prussia dissolved the abbey in 1810. German Benedictines from Prague lived here from 1919 to 1946, and during World War II the monastery stored treasures evacuated from Berlin's Prussian State Library – they ended up in Kraków's Jagiellonian Library after the war. Benedictine nuns from Lviv arrived in 1946 and still have a convent here. In 2004, the abbey became a Monument of History – the highest national heritage designation in Poland.

Things to see

• The basilica – a theatrical façade crowded with statues, and an interior of frescoes and gilding. The high altar holds the icon of Our Lady of Grace, a 13th-century panel painting hidden under the sacristy floor during a Hussite raid in 1426 and rediscovered almost two centuries later. Pope John Paul II crowned it in 1997.
• The Michael Engler organ (1732–1736) – 2,690 pipes, 50 stops, three manuals, and about 95% original parts.
• The Mausoleum of the Piasts of Świdnica and Jawor, behind the chancel, with the tombs of Bolko I and Bolko II.
• St. Joseph's Church (1690–1696), nicknamed the "Silesian Sistine Chapel," with frescoes by Michael Willmann, who hid several self-portraits among the scenes.
• The monastery crypts, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, the Dukes' Well and the Dukes' Avenue.

Tickets, tours and opening hours

As of October 2026, according to the abbey:

• Tickets: 30 PLN adult, 25 PLN reduced, 20 PLN children; under-6s free. Individual visitors get an audio guide in seven languages, including English and German, at no extra cost – bring your own headphones (disposable ones are sold in the shop).
• Guides: an English-, German- or Czech-speaking guide costs 300 PLN per group (up to 50 people) and must be booked through the visitor office.
• "Touch the Engler": daily at 11:00 and 13:00 in July and August (15 PLN) you can climb inside the organ; the rest of the year by reservation.
• Viewing tower: 71 m high, almost 200 steps, open on weekends in July and August.
• Hours of the tourist route: 8:00–18:00 from May 1 to October 15, 8:00–16:00 from October 16 to April 30. The visitor office where you buy tickets opens at 9:00.
• Sightseeing in the churches is not allowed during Mass; in winter, weekday Masses are at 7:00 and 18:00, and on Sundays at 7:30 (St. Joseph's), 10:00, 12:00 and 17:00.

Is Krzeszów worth visiting?

Absolutely – if you like Baroque art, it rivals anything in Prague or Vienna, with a fraction of the crowds. Plan 2–3 hours for the route, or half a day with lunch at the on-site restaurant and a walk to the Calvary chapels and summer pavilion. Modest clothing is required in the churches.

In winter, the churches are cold, snow is common in this valley, and daylight ends early, so arrive in the morning.
