Basilica of the Assumption in Krzeszów

The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Krzeszów is the main church of the former Cistercian abbey and one of the most important Baroque monuments in Lower Silesia. It belongs to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, combining architecture, painting, sculpture and organ music. Plan a visit to the basilica as part of the wider abbey route.

History and architecture

The foundation stone of the present church was laid in 1728, and construction ended with its consecration in 1735. The church was built during the Baroque rebuilding of the Cistercian abbey. Its architect is uncertain; historical studies mention, among others, Christoph Tausch and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.

What to see

The high altar contains the venerated icon of Our Lady of Grace, dated by abbey materials to the mid-13th century and crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Look for the frescoes, altars, choir stalls and the organ by Michael Engler. The rear of the church contains the Mausoleum of the Świdnica-Jawor Piasts. The abbey route can also include St Joseph’s Church, St Mary Magdalene Chapel and the undergrounds.

Practical information

The basilica is at 3 John Paul II Square in Krzeszów. The official tourist route is open in high season, from 1 May to 31 October, 9:00–18:00, and in low season, from 1 November to 30 April, 9:00–16:00. These are route hours, not Mass times; check current abbey notices, prices and photography rules before travelling. Keep quiet and dress appropriately during services.
