Bastion Sakwowy in Wrocław (roughly "SAHK-vo-vy"; long known locally as Partisans' Hill) is a 16th-century bastion of the old city walls that was turned into a romantic hilltop promenade in the 19th century. Following a major restoration completed in 2025, its curved colonnade, pavilion and fountain square look better than they have in decades, and the terraces overlook the old moat and the leafy Old Town Promenade. It's a 10-minute walk from the Market Square and especially lovely after dark.
The bastion was built in 1571 to a design by Hans Schneider, guarding the southeast corner of the city's fortifications; it was later used as a gunpowder store. After Napoleon's French forces ordered the walls demolished in 1807, Johann Friedrich Knorr reshaped it into a hilltop walk. In 1867 merchant Adolf Liebich paid for a belvedere and tower in memory of his brother, and the hill became Liebichs Höhe. The tower did not survive World War II. In 1945 the commander of "Festung Breslau" had his bunker in the old casemates.
After the war the hill was unofficially called Partisans' Hill (Wzgórze Partyzantów) from 1948. In 2024 the city formally restored the historic name, Bastion Sakwowy.
Under communism the hill was a popular entertainment spot, but in 1967 a staircase collapsed during the student Juwenalia festival, killing one person. In 1990 the site was leased to a private company for 40 years and slowly fell apart; a court ordered the lease ended in 2017. The city then took over and restored it – phase I cost about 30 million PLN, phase II nearly 6.7 million PLN.
A third phase covering the former observatory on the summit and the casemates is still only planned, so those areas remain closed.
The grounds are free and, according to the city, open daily around the clock, with security monitoring. Allow 30–45 minutes. Side paths have ramps, but there are steps and steep slopes; the route from Nowa Street is the easiest for wheelchairs and strollers. Café and restaurant hours are set by the tenants.
The bastion sits by Piotra Skargi and Nowa streets, on the moat, about 10 minutes on foot from the Market Square. The Wzgórze Partyzantów tram stop is right nearby. Wrocław Airport is about 10 km west of the center.
Follow the Old Town Promenade along the moat to Theater Square, the Wrocław Opera and the National Museum. The Market Hall is a short walk north, and the Market Square with the Old Town Hall lies to the northwest.
