Niedzica Castle

Niedzica Castle (say "nyeh-JEET-sah"), also known as Dunajec Castle, is a white-walled Gothic and Renaissance fortress on a rocky hill above Czorsztyn Lake in southern Poland. For six centuries it was a Hungarian border stronghold, facing Poland's Czorsztyn Castle across the Dunajec River. Today it is a museum with period interiors, a carriage house and an 18th-century granary — and the source of Poland's most famous treasure legend, involving the Incas. If you are visiting the Pieniny Mountains, this is the one castle not to miss.

Where is Niedzica Castle?

Niedzica lies in the Spiš (Polish: Spisz) region of the Lesser Poland province, a few kilometers from the Slovak border. Kraków and its international airport are roughly a two-hour drive away via Nowy Targ; the spa town of Szczawnica is under half an hour by car. There is no train to Niedzica, so a car or an organized tour is the practical option. Many day trips from Kraków combine the castle with Dunajec River rafting.

A Hungarian castle in Poland

The castle's story explains its unusual look. Polish Spiš belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1920, so Niedzica was built and owned by Hungarian nobility. Its origins go back to the early 14th century; a stone castle is reliably recorded in 1330, in the will of the regional governor Wilhelm Drugeth. The oldest part is the Gothic upper castle.

Later owners left their mark. In the 15th century Emeric Zápolya, one of Hungary's most powerful magnates, expanded it with a lower castle. Around 1600 the Horváth-Palocsay family remodeled it in Renaissance style, and the Salamon family were the last private owners. On July 28, 1920, after World War I, the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris assigned Niedzica to Poland.

After World War II the castle stood empty and was looted. The Polish Association of Art Historians began restoring it in 1948 and opened the museum in 1963; it still runs the site today.

The Inca treasure legend

According to legend, an 18th-century descendant of the Berzeviczy family traveled to Peru, and his daughter Umina married an Inca noble. After a failed uprising, the family supposedly hid clues to an Inca treasure at Niedzica. In 1946, a metal tube containing a quipu — the Inca knotted-cord record — was said to have been found under the castle gate. The man who found it later died in a car crash, the quipu vanished and no treasure was ever found. Historians treat the story as legend, but it is part of the castle's charm.

What to see

• Upper and middle castle — museum rooms, courtyards and terraces with views over the lake to Czorsztyn's ruins.
• Carriage house — horse-drawn vehicles from 1900–1939.
• Granary — a wooden building from the 1790s, open in summer only.
• Temporary exhibitions — art and photography shows change through the year.

The castle also appeared in Polish films, including Zemsta (1956) and Mazepa (1975).

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

• May 1 – September 30: daily 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. (last individual entry 6:20 p.m.).
• October 1 – April 30, including winter 2026/27: Tuesday – Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., closed Mondays; last individual entry 3:20 p.m., last guided entry 3 p.m.
• Castle and carriage house: 40 PLN adult, 30 PLN reduced. Granary: 10 PLN (summer only). Children under 5 free.
• Tickets are timed. Reservations are not accepted, but some tickets are sold online; the rest at the box office. Arrive at the time printed on your ticket.

Polish złoty (PLN) is the currency. English-language guiding is not mentioned on the museum website, so check in advance if you need it.

Is Niedzica Castle worth visiting?

Yes. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the castle and carriage house, longer if you walk to the viewpoints by the lake. Summer weekends are busy — come early. Interiors have stairs and uneven floors, so it is not easy with a stroller or wheelchair.

Best time to visit

Summer brings the longest hours and lake cruises, but also the biggest crowds. September and October offer golden beech forests and quieter rooms. In winter 2026/27 the museum opens Tuesday to Sunday until 4 p.m.; the castle above the frozen lake is magical, but daylight is short, so come before noon. Remember it is closed on Mondays from October to April.
