Krasiczyn Castle

Krasiczyn Castle (say "krah-SHEE-chin") is one of the finest Renaissance residences in Poland, set in the San River valley about 6 miles (10 km) west of Przemyśl, in the country's far southeast. Its square layout, four very different corner towers and walls covered in intricate scratched-plaster decoration make it look almost too ornate to be real. Add a large landscaped park with centuries-old trees and a pond, and you have one of the best things to do in the Podkarpackie region, especially if you are combining it with Przemyśl's old town and WWI forts.

A short history

In the mid-16th century a small fortified manor stood here. Between about 1580 and 1590, Stanisław Krasicki, the castellan of Przemyśl, built a stone castle on a square plan with four towers. His son Marcin Krasicki rebuilt it between 1598 and 1633 in the Mannerist style, giving it the lavish look you see today.

The Krasicki family held the castle until 1687. Russian and Cossack troops looted it in 1726. In 1834 it was bought by Leon Sapieha, and the Sapieha princes owned it until 1939; Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha, the archbishop of Kraków who ordained the future Pope John Paul II, was born here. After a fire in 1852 and damage in World War I, the architect Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz restored the complex from 1928. After 1945 it housed a forestry school; since 1996 it has been managed by the state-owned Industrial Development Agency (ARP), which carried out a major restoration. In 2018 the castle and park were listed as a Monument of History, Poland's highest heritage designation.

What to see

• The four towers, each symbolizing part of the old world order: the Divine Tower with its dome and chapel, the Papal Tower, the Royal Tower with six turrets, and the Nobles' Tower topped with a crown.
• Sgraffito – decoration scratched into layers of plaster covers about 75,000 sq ft (7,000 m²) of wall. In the arcaded courtyard you will spot biblical scenes, medallions with emperors' busts, portraits of Polish kings and hunting scenes.
• The courtyard with its arcades, grand staircase and the clock tower above the gate.
• The chapel in the Divine Tower and the Sapieha family crypt.
• The dungeons with a torture chamber and the clock tower, which you can visit on your own with a separate ticket.

The castle park

The castle sits in a landscaped park with a pond and long avenues. The Sapiehas had a charming custom: they planted an oak for every son and a linden for every daughter born in the family, and some of those trees are still standing. The park stays open from early morning until late evening.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

• High season (April 1 – October 31): guided tours start every hour on the hour, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., daily; a tour runs when at least 5 tickets are sold. Tours last about 50 minutes.
• Off-season (November 1 – March 31): visits by reservation only, made at least one day ahead; last entry 3 p.m. If you are coming in winter 2026/27, book in advance.
• Park: 6 a.m.–10 p.m.
• Tickets: guided castle tour (park included) 35 PLN / 27 PLN reduced; combo ticket (park, guided tour, clock tower, dungeons) 40 PLN / 32 PLN; park only 8 PLN / 5 PLN; dungeons or clock tower 6 PLN each. Cards are accepted.

The castle also runs a hotel with a restaurant, café and pastry shop, so you can have lunch or even spend the night.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are anywhere near Przemyśl. Allow 2–3 hours for the tour and a walk in the park. Kids usually love the dungeons, and the flat park paths work for strollers. Fall, when the old trees turn gold, is a lovely time to come.

How to get to Krasiczyn

The castle (Krasiczyn 179) is about 10 km west of Przemyśl. From Kraków, take the A4 motorway east to Przemyśl (around 155 miles / 250 km, about three hours), then a short drive on local roads; there is a monitored parking lot at the castle. The nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE). A car is by far the easiest option.
