Castles
Przemyśl, Subcarpathian
Przemyśl Castle (say "PSHEH-mishl"), also called Casimir Castle after King Casimir the Great, crowns Castle Hill above the old town of Przemyśl, a historic border town in southeastern Poland. This is where the story of one of Poland's oldest towns begins: archaeologists have uncovered the remains of an early 11th-century rotunda and palace right beside the walls. Today the rebuilt Renaissance castle is a cultural center with a theater, and its lookout tower offers one of the best views in town. A visit takes about an hour, so it fits easily into a walk around the old town.
The oldest structures on the hill are a stone rotunda and palatium (a royal residence) from the early 11th century, linked to the reign of Bolesław the Brave, Poland's first crowned king. After 1340, Casimir the Great built a Gothic stone castle here; a pointed-arch gateway and the foundations of a tower survive from that time.
Between 1514 and 1553 the castle was remodeled in Renaissance style, gaining round corner towers and a two-story gatehouse. In the 17th century it was modernized by Marcin Krasicki, the same magnate who created nearby Krasiczyn Castle, and it held out against Cossack, Swedish and Hungarian attacks.
Decline came in the 18th century, when part of the castle was pulled down in 1759–1762. Under Austrian rule it served as barracks and a prison. In 1884 an amateur theater society, Fredreum, moved in and turned the castle into a theater; the theater hall, modernized in 2011, is still in use. Parts of the walls and towers were rebuilt in the late 20th century, and since 2012 excavations have exposed the rotunda, the palatium and a Romanesque church.
If you are in Przemyśl, yes: it is short, inexpensive and the view from the tower is the best way to get your bearings. Plan 45–60 minutes. It is a good option with kids and on rainy days, and in the evenings the castle hosts plays and concerts.
Przemyśl lies on the A4 motorway about 155 miles (250 km) east of Kraków, roughly three hours by car, and has direct trains from Kraków and Rzeszów. The nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE). The castle (Aleje XXV Polskiej Drużyny Strzeleckiej 1) is a short uphill walk from the Market Square and a little over half a mile from the main train station. Parking near the hill is limited, so leave the car lower down and walk up through the park.
Walk down to the Market Square, visit the cathedral, the Bell and Pipe Museum in the Clock Tower and the National Museum of the Przemyśl Land, then climb the Tatar Mound. Outside town, explore the WWI forts of Przemyśl Fortress and Renaissance Krasiczyn Castle.
