Roman Catholic Archcathedral in Przemyśl

The Roman Catholic Archcathedral in Przemyśl, dedicated to St John the Baptist and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the city’s most important landmarks. Its story includes a Gothic presbytery, Baroque rebuilding and remains of an even older Romanesque church. Together with the bishop’s palace and Cathedral Tower, it shapes the skyline of Przemyśl.

History and architecture

The cathedral was built in the 15th and 16th centuries on the site of an earlier structure. Archaeological research revealed remains of a Romanesque rotunda, whose walls survive in the crypts. In the 18th century the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style, combining a medieval presbytery with later furnishings. This layering of periods is one of the site’s greatest strengths.

Crypts and Cathedral Tower

The underground area contains remains of the earlier church and burial places connected with the bishops. The late-Baroque Cathedral Tower is about 71 metres high and is one of Przemyśl’s main viewpoints. A terrace at the level of the clock faces opens a panorama of the city, hills and San valley; tower access can depend on the season and organiser.

Visiting in the city centre

The archcathedral is an active church, so check opening times and crypt access before travelling. Allow 30–45 minutes for the church, or longer if you add the tower and castle-hill walk. Combine it with the Royal Castle, market square and Franciszkańska Street.
