Castles
Sułoszowa
Pieskowa Skała Castle (roughly "pyes-KOH-vah SKAH-wah") is a Renaissance residence perched on a limestone spur above the Prądnik valley in Ojców National Park, about 30 km (19 miles) northwest of Kraków. One of the most beautiful castles on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, it is known for its arcaded courtyard, a panoramic loggia and a storybook clock tower. Since 1958 it has been a branch of Wawel Royal Castle, so its galleries show treasures from the Wawel collections.
The castle sits in the village of Pieskowa Skała (Sułoszowa municipality), Lesser Poland, in Ojców National Park, Poland's smallest national park. From Kraków it's under an hour by car via road 773 from the direction of Skała, Ojców or Olkusz. By public transport, take private minibuses or the A13 feeder bus run by Koleje Małopolskie. There is no parking at the castle: use the national park car parks at the foot of the hill (one at the junction of the roads to Skała, Sułoszowa and Wielmoża, another below the Club of Hercules rock) or nearby private lots, then walk a few minutes uphill.
The castle first appears in 1315, in a document of King Władysław the Short, under the German-sounding name "Peskenstein." King Casimir the Great built a stone watchtower here in the 14th century to guard the road from Kraków to Silesia. In 1377 it passed to the Szafraniec family, who held it for over two centuries; one of them, Krzysztof, became a notorious robber knight and was beheaded in 1484. In the 16th century the Szafraniecs turned the fortress into an Italian-style Renaissance residence with an arcaded courtyard inspired by the rebuilding of Wawel.
Later owners added a chapel and bastions; Swedish troops plundered it in 1655; King Stanisław August Poniatowski stayed here in 1787; and January Uprising insurgents fought here on the night of March 3–4, 1863. From 1903 to 1939 it was a guesthouse, and during the German occupation an orphanage. After World War II the courtyard and loggia were reconstructed.
Prices in Polish złoty (PLN), standard/reduced:
Tuesday to Sunday, routes run 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (last entry 3:30–4:30 p.m. depending on the route). On Mondays in October, selected exhibitions are free from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours are shorter from November. Groups can book a curator-led tour in Polish, English or German in advance. Buy tickets at the gate or online via the Wawel ticketing site.
Allow about 1.5 hours for the castle on the main route, and half a day if you add the gardens, the Club of Hercules and a valley walk. Short on time? The Noble Times route with an audio guide covers the highlights in an hour. Note the exceptions for October 2026: exhibitions are closed on October 12, and October 13 is a free day. A temporary exhibition in the cellars, "A Little Dog on the Rock: Pieskowa Skała in Comics," is a hit with kids and free with any ticket.
Yes — it's one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Kraków. Allow half a day: the castle, the Club of Hercules (Maczuga Herkulesa), a striking limestone pillar right below the walls, and a walk along the Prądnik valley toward Ojców with its castle ruins and King Łokietek's Cave. Autumn foliage makes October especially beautiful.
