Castles
Darłowo, West Pomeranian
Darłowo Castle, officially the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes (say "dar-WOH-voh"), is the only Gothic seaside castle in Poland and one of the best-preserved medieval complexes on the Baltic coast. The brick fortress with a tower stands on an artificial island between the Wieprza River and the Mill Canal. Today it houses a museum with castle chambers, a maritime exhibition and a witch torture chamber. If you are looking for things to do on a Baltic holiday, especially on a rainy day, it is a safe bet.
Darłowo (German: Rügenwalde) lies on the Baltic coast of Poland's West Pomerania region, about 30 km from Koszalin, 60 km from Kołobrzeg and 150 km from Gdańsk as the crow flies. Szczecin is roughly 160 km away and Berlin nearly 290 km. The easiest way to travel is by car. The castle is at ul. Zamkowa 4 in the town centre. The official site does not describe parking.
Construction began in 1352 under Duke Bogusław V. Between 1449 and 1459 the castle was rebuilt by Eric of Pomerania, the former king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, who spent his last years here after losing his thrones. In 1622 Duke Bogusław XIV handed the castle to Denmark, and it later belonged to the Oldenburg and Glücksburg dynasties. In 1773 Denmark gave it to Prussia, which used it as barracks and for other purposes in the 19th century. A museum opened here in 1930, and the castle underwent a major renovation between 1971 and 1988. The museum reopened on 22 October 1988.
The castle is built of brick on a plan close to a square around a courtyard with several buildings. The oldest interior is the Knights' Hall, with a star vault from the late 14th century. In the time of Bogusław XIV a richly decorated castle chapel was added. The tower is 24 m high and holds a bird exhibition. In the chambers you will see Baroque furniture, a collection of Eastern art and instruments of torture, while separate entrances lead to the Maritime Exhibition, the Witch Torture Chamber and a Medieval Games Room. From 1 May to 31 August you can also enter just the courtyard for 5 PLN if you do not hold an exhibition ticket.
The route through the castle is one-way and marked. Plan one to one and a half hours for the castle chambers, or up to two and a half hours with the tower, the maritime exhibition and the torture chamber. In the autumn-winter season individual visits start every half hour from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, so choose your slot in advance. Flash and tripods are not allowed, and dogs may enter only as guide dogs.
The Medieval Games Room has its own ticket for 18 PLN, and it is worth asking at the ticket office what it offers, especially with children. The Witch Torture Chamber can be intense for younger children, so judge it before you enter. Children under 6 enter free. The museum also runs museum lessons for 20 PLN per person. We found no accessibility details for wheelchairs on the pages we read, so check the accessibility statement on the castle website or call.
Whether the labels and staff offer English is not stated on the official pages, so ask when you book.
Yes. It is a rare combination of a real medieval castle, a royal story and Baltic atmosphere. It is open all year, but offers the full range from May to August, when it runs daily. In autumn and winter it is quieter, though the shorter schedule needs planning. Afterwards, walk along the Wieprza into town or drive to Darłówko for the sea.
