Fortifications
Ustka, Pomeranian
The Blücher Bunkers in Ustka are a surviving German coastal and anti-aircraft battery from the late 1930s, hidden among pine trees on a dune just west of the harbor in this Polish Baltic resort. Today the underground shelters house a modern museum, and the grounds form a small history park with family activities. It is one of the few places on this stretch of coast where you can go inside pre-war fortifications — and a good plan for a rainy beach day.
Ustka (say "OOST-kah"), formerly the German port of Stolpmünde, lies on Poland's central Baltic coast, about 120 km west of Gdańsk as the crow flies. The museum is at ul. Bohaterów Westerplatte 40, about 200 m from the harbor swing footbridge. By rail, go to Słupsk and take the local train to Ustka (about 20 minutes), then walk 15–20 minutes.
German forces built the battery around 1938–39, fearing a Polish landing at Stolpmünde; it became the northernmost bastion of the Pomeranian Wall fortification line. It was armed with four 105 mm guns for naval and anti-aircraft fire, with an effective range against ships of about 17 km, according to the local tourism organization. Each gun weighed about 7.5 tonnes and fired shells of roughly 20 kg. The battery was also linked to a grand Third Reich harbor project, a third pier west of the river mouth, never completed. It was named after Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, famous for Waterloo and patron of the hussar regiment based in nearby Stolp (Słupsk). Reinforced-concrete gun emplacements, a rangefinder bunker, a command post and crew quarters survive, partly linked by tunnels.
The exhibition does not glorify the war: it presents the human cost of the conflict and the futility of the huge sums spent on turning Stolpmünde into a fortress. English-speaking visitors can follow the whole route with the audio guide, so you do not need any Polish. Combine the visit with a walk on West Beach and back across the swing bridge.
