Ustka, Pomeranian
The Ustka seaside promenade is the walk that defines this small Polish Baltic resort: a raised boardwalk-style path running along the dunes from the lighthouse and harbor mouth eastward above a wide sandy beach. Ustka (say "OOST-kah"), once the German spa town of Stolpmünde, has welcomed bathers since the 19th century, and the promenade ties together its best sights — lighthouse, swing footbridge, mermaid statue and spa parks. If you only have an hour in Ustka, spend it here.
Ustka sits on Poland's central Baltic coast in the Pomeranian region, at the mouth of the Słupia River. It is about 120 km west of Gdańsk as the crow flies; Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) is the nearest major airport. Trains run from Gdańsk and Gdynia to Słupsk ("swoopsk"), from where a local train reaches Ustka in about 20 minutes. Drivers from Berlin cover roughly 400 km via Szczecin.
The promenade was the brainchild of a local bathing society founded in 1870 to turn the fishing village into a fashionable resort; the walkway officially opened in 1875. Hotels, guesthouses and cafés followed, and after World War II, when the town became Polish, cafés and a small fountain were added near the old spa pavilion. Ustka has held official spa-town status since 1988.
Sources disagree on length: the local tourism organization quotes over 1,100 m for the historic section, while other sources give over 2 km including a newer extension.
Yes — it is free, flat and scenic, and it gives you a quick feel for a classic Polish seaside resort. Allow 30–45 minutes for a one-way stroll, half a day with stops. July and August are busy and lively; spring and fall are calm, and winter storms can be dramatic. Sunsets over the harbor are the highlight.
Note: since July 2025 Poland's Maritime Office in Gdynia has been rebuilding both harbor breakwaters (scheduled completion: September 2026). Access to the breakwaters was closed during the work; check on site whether it has reopened.
Cross the swing footbridge to the Blücher Bunkers museum on the western side, wander the old fishing quarter around Marynarki Polskiej Street, or take a day trip to Rowy and Lake Gardno in Słowiński National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
