Smołdzino, Pomeranian
Rowokół (say "ro-VO-koow") is a forested glacial hill beside the village of Smołdzino on Poland's central Baltic coast. At about 115 m above sea level it is the highest point of the Słowiński coastal plain and for centuries served sailors as a landmark. A national park observation tower on the summit looks over Lakes Gardno and Łebsko, the dunes and the sea. Add legends of a "holy mountain," a medieval stronghold and beech woods, and you have one of the area's most pleasant short hikes.
The hill is a terminal moraine left by the last ice sheet, about 6 km inland. It rises to 114.8 m. It became a nature reserve in 1984 to protect its beech and fir forest and is now an enclave of Słowiński National Park, with a nature trail around the massif. Because it is easy to see from the sea, it long served as a navigation mark.
The national park relates that a pagan shrine once stood here, where fires guided fishermen at night, and that a medieval chapel of St. Nicholas, patron of sailors, later replaced it. A Marian sanctuary stood on the summit from the 12th to 16th centuries, with an early medieval settlement on the slope. In 1681 Duke Ernst Bogislaw von Croÿ left money in his will for a lighthouse on the hill, but it was never built. Until 1945 the area was German and the hill was called Revekol.
The tower offers views of Smołdzino, both lakes, the dune belt and the Baltic. It closes in fog, rain, snow, ice, thunderstorms, winds above 10 m/s and after storm warnings. Dogs are not allowed up.
Notice (October 9, 2026): the stairs up Rowokół are closed; the park asks visitors to use the alternative route from the Smołdzino side.
Smołdzino is about 25 km north of Słupsk; year-round bus 104 runs between them. The park's suggested loop on the yellow and blue trails starts and ends at the gas station in Smołdzino. Allow 1–2 hours. Słupsk has trains from Gdańsk and Szczecin.
The forest path is short and suits families, though the final climb is steep and not stroller-friendly. Clear spring and autumn days give the best visibility. An Easter Passion play has been staged on the hill since the early 2000s. Combine Rowokół with the open-air museum in Kluki to the east and the Czołpino lighthouse to the north for a full day in the western part of the national park.
Is it worth visiting?
Yes, especially from May to September when the tower is open to everyone.
