Bolków Castle

Bolków Castle is one of the largest Piast strongholds in Lower Silesia. Its ruins cover 7,600 square metres of Castle Hill (396 m above sea level), dropping away to the west in a 90-metre cliff above the Nysa Szalona river. From the walls the view reaches the Karkonosze mountains, and every year the courtyard becomes a stage for music festivals.

The stronghold that never fell

The castle was built between 1277 and 1293. The first recorded mention comes from Duke Bolesław II Rogatka of Legnica, and the fortress was later expanded by Duke Bolko I the Strict of Świdnica-Jawor to guard the passes from Bohemia into Silesia. For centuries it defended itself with distinction: a Czech siege failed in 1345, and when the Hussites burned the town in 1428, the castle held out. Only Swedish troops managed to take it, in 1646, in the middle of the Thirty Years' War.

Tower, drawbridge and dungeon

The best-preserved element is the tower, 25 metres tall with walls 4.5 metres thick at the base. A drawbridge suspended 9 metres above the ground once took the place of a gate, and below waits a 10-metre dungeon accessible only from above. After Duchess Agnes died in 1392, the castle passed to the Bohemian kings, and in the early 16th century Ferdinand I granted it for life to the Bishop of Wrocław — a rebuild followed in 1539–1540.

The ruin that lives on festivals

Sold to the Cistercians in 1703, the castle emptied out, and after the secularisation of 1810 it fell into ruin; part of the walls was later dismantled for road material. But the ruin never went quiet: in mid-July the courtyard hosts Castle Party, a gothic and darkwave festival, and in early September the Trzy Żywioły travel festival takes over. Historical reenactments bring the site to life through the season.

Before you go

A visit means walking the courtyard and the walls, so bring sturdy shoes. If you prefer calm over crowds, check the festival dates in advance — during the events the castle looks its best, but it is also at its loudest.
